Matching the Remedy to the Reason Cash Is Missing

New borrowing should follow diagnosis rather than urgency, so the owner should name the shortage, test renegotiation first, compare conventional products on total obligation, and treat receivables pledges as collateral decisions with contract consequences.

The alternative should answer the reason cash is missing, not the urgency with which it is missing.

A company waiting on a dependable invoice needs a different remedy than a business whose ordinary sales no longer cover its expenses. Before comparing products, the owner should determine whether the problem is timing, cost, existing debt, or margin. That is the cost of borrowing the diagnosis along with the money, and most comparisons omit it without mention.

Identifying the Shortage

Rarely does a product description ask why the receipts stopped covering the obligations.

A timing shortage ends when the customer pays. A cost shortage persists after the customer pays, because the advance consumed the margin the payment was meant to restore. A debt shortage belongs to obligations already signed, and a margin shortage belongs to operations that lose money at any volume. The promise of speed (which defenders of high cost advances will call the price of access) deserves no weight until the shortage has a name. The advance was fast. It was also the most expensive money in the building.

The advance settles into the account the way a guest settles into a spare room: without resistance at first, and with increasing cost for every week it remains.

In most of the files we have reviewed, though the sample is not scientific, the owner had never separated the four shortages before applying. Simply write the diagnosis in one sentence before opening any application. A product that funds every applicant has not examined any of them, and the examination is the part the borrower must supply.

Renegotiating Existing Obligations

Ninety days after funding, the first minimum comes due whether or not the diagnosis was performed.

Ask whether a supplier or creditor will consider a revised schedule supported by actual receipts. Agreement is not assured, but the inquiry can establish whether new borrowing is necessary at all. The request was, if we are being precise, a proposal rather than a plea, and it should arrive with dates and amounts the company can support.

Prepare the offer around something like two months of statements, so the other party evaluates documented capacity rather than optimism. A vague request for more time gives the creditor little to assess. Keep any accepted change in writing, with extremely specific dates beside the originals. We would ensure the writing names the authorized parties on both sides of the change.

We would ensure the owner knows which obligations were addressed and which were postponed without resolution. Steps taken, or not taken, with existing creditors decide whether new money relieves pressure or moves it to a new creditor.

Conventional Loans and Credit Lines

The PayPal Working Capital page describes a product with terms that repay a slow reading. PayPal Working Capital (which the provider itself identifies as a loan from WebBank carrying a single fixed fee rather than a factor rate, with repayment drawn as a percentage of PayPal sales subject to a minimum every 90 days) still requires eligibility the owner must confirm, including account history and sales thresholds. Its Business Loan sibling uses weekly bank account payments with personal and business credit checks and a minimum of nine months in business. Both identify WebBank as lender, and neither description establishes approval for any particular business.

Compare total cost, collateral, guaranties, and payment timing rather than relying on the product name. A loan repaid from sales resembles an advance in rhythm while differing in obligation, and the resemblance has misled borrowers in both directions. The resemblance is extremely durable across product categories. A factor that withholds its reserve calculation in order to preserve its advantage in the next advance has disclosed its priorities. Whether this holds for businesses outside card based sales is a question we cannot answer from this desk, which is why the actual agreement governs rather than the category.

You sign the renewal and then you learn what the renewal cost. The cheapest money is the obligation renegotiated rather than replaced, and the sentence arrives here before the argument for new borrowing has finished, because the comparison should have started there.

Receivables Financing and New Borrowing

The OCC framework for receivables financing treats such arrangements as collateral based commercial lending with distinct credit and administrative risks. The SBA guarantee program backs participating lenders for permitted uses that include working capital and refinancing of current business debt, subject to eligibility the owner must establish. Neither framework endorses any particular factor or promises any approval.

Whether the receivables would survive an examiner style review of quality and dilution is a question the owner should pose before pledging them.

Recourse, reserves, customer disputes, and collection control are contract questions. The reserve is a word the agreement gives a narrower definition than ordinary speech, and the definition controls. The receivables answer first. The application answers second.

The Order of Operations

Most owners shop for money the way they shop for nothing else in the business. I understand the haste.

Review and analyze the shortage, gather and assemble the statements, and construct a proposal for existing creditors before seeking new funds. I have yet to see a forecast improve upon contact with a second daily debit, though the second debit always arrives with an outlandish confidence in the forecast. Any term sheet received, even casually summarized over the telephone, should be confirmed against the written agreement. Resist the urge to let urgency choose the product.

We would ensure the chosen remedy matches the diagnosed shortage rather than the loudest advertisement. The diagnosis outlives the product. Delancey Street is a settlement company, not a law firm. It offers a free confidential initial review of existing MCA and business debt obligations, and it coordinates with independently licensed counsel where legal work is required. A first call costs nothing and assumes nothing; it is the beginning of a diagnosis conducted against the pressure of the case rather than in service of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Business debt settlement involves negotiating with commercial creditors to accept a reduced lump-sum payment. A professional firm works with your MCA funders, equipment lenders, and vendors to settle debts for 40-60% less than owed. The process typically takes 3-18 months with attorney-led firms.

Businesses typically resolve debt for 30-60 cents on the dollar. After fees (15-25%), net savings range from 20-40%. Attorney-led firms achieve higher reductions due to litigation leverage.

Settlement can temporarily impact credit, but most businesses pursuing settlement are already behind on payments. The goal is eliminating unserviceable debt so you can rebuild from a clean baseline. Most scores recover within 12-24 months.

Attorney-led firms like Delancey Street settle in 3-9 months. General firms take 24-48 months. MCA settlements move faster because funders prefer quick recovery over protracted litigation.
