The loan should finance a purpose that produces the capacity to repay it. That proposition sounds obvious until the proceeds are committed to covering the previous loan payment.

Before acceptance of a small business loan, the owner should establish the use of proceeds and the source of repayment. The speed of the offer matters less than whether those two facts belong in the same business plan.

1. Define the Expense Being Financed

The purpose of the proceeds decides the repayment pattern, and a vehicle, an inventory purchase and a seasonal cash gap do not impose the same demands on the operating account.

Write the amount required and separate essential costs from spending added because more credit became available. Include fees deducted before disbursement when calculating what the business will receive, since a funding amount that sounds sufficient can prove inadequate after existing balances and charges are removed.

Simply compare net proceeds against the actual invoice or operating requirement.

Hope is not a repayment source.

Often the stated purpose shifts between application and funding. The forecast should identify a repayment source beyond the expectation that another provider will refinance the obligation, since that hope is extremely expensive when it becomes a recurring practice.

2. Examine Lender and SBA Options

The SBA description of eligible 7(a) uses covers working capital, equipment and qualifying refinancing of current business debt through participating lenders. Eligibility and underwriting remain part of the process, and the federal guaranty protects the lender under its terms without erasing the obligation of the borrower to repay.

What the owner verifies, or trusts to conversation, before signing determines the value of every comparison that follows. Ask about security, guarantees, payment frequency and the costs of early repayment rather than assuming the lowest advertised rate decides suitability.

Eligibility describes the boundaries of a program; it does not establish that this borrower can support this payment. Where existing debt is refinanced, obtain payoff information and confirm the proposed use meets the rules of the lender, since not every expensive obligation qualifies for every refinancing program.

Have an adviser review and analyze the complete schedule against the weakest operating month. Counsel can ensure the security terms are understood and ensure the new agreement conflicts with no interest already granted to another party.

Bank counsel in these transactions tends to request the receivables report before requesting the business plan. Whether the lender priced the risk or passed it along is a question the amortization table does not address.

Ask for time to read the documents. The business will have considerably longer to perform them.

Match the Term to the Purchase

For equipment, compare the repayment period with the period in which the asset is expected to contribute to operations. Maintenance, installation and time without production belong in the calculation, and a schedule that begins before the equipment earns anything can strain an otherwise sound purchase.

Inventory presents a different question of timing. Identify when the stock can be sold, how long customers take to pay and what remains if part of the order must be discounted. A schedule that collects against inventory before the season opens can create a shortage inside an otherwise profitable transaction.

3. Distinguish Sales Based Repayment From Legal Classification

PayPal describes Working Capital as a business loan with a fixed fee, repayment through a percentage of PayPal sales and minimum repayment requirements. A sales based collection method therefore does not establish that a product is an MCA receivables purchase, and some providers describe a purchase in order to avoid the obligations that accompany a loan. The clause operates like a parking meter outside a shop that has closed for the night: exact in measurement, indifferent to whether any customer remains.

The PayPal Working Capital product description supplies the actual terms for that product. Identify the contract and the lender behind every other offer with equal care, since marketing language can obscure differences that matter to repayment and to legal analysis.

The heading on the agreement is insufficient.

4. Review Existing MCA Pressure With Delancey Street

Delancey Street free confidential initial review for MCA distress and coordinates legal matters with independently licensed counsel. It is a debt settlement company, so its role here is assessment of existing obligations rather than provision of the new loan under consideration.

Borrowing to cover the previous payment converts the lender into the business plan.

If the proposed borrowing exists to sustain MCA withdrawals, a negotiation assessment may provide a useful alternative for comparison. Confirm the accounts covered and the fee before engaging any service, since the comparison should place net proceeds, total repayment and timing of withdrawal beside each other before any advertised rate enters the discussion.

Resist the urge to conceal existing advances from a prospective lender. Accurate information is necessary to assess both eligibility and whether the new payment can be supported, and a remark about cash position, even casually, can alter the posture of the case the lender builds against you. The broker assurance often carries a wry optimism that the written terms decline to share.

Copies of the final offer, disclosures and signed documents protect and preserve the owner when a later dispute concerns what was promised. Seldom does a weak quarter announce itself in advance, which is why the file must be complete before the quarter arrives.

5. Test the Consequences of a Weak Quarter

Use a forecast in which receipts arrive late and sales fall below expectation. Determine which expenses remain fixed and how the proposed payment behaves during that period.

A plan that requires a precise result from every uncertain assumption is extremely fragile. That fragility alone does not prohibit borrowing; it identifies the conditions the owner should examine before acceptance.

Read what default permits the lender to do and whether the owner has assumed personal liability. A useful loan supports work the enterprise can perform, and the signature should mark the beginning of an investment whose repayment mechanism is already visible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Business debt settlement involves negotiating with commercial creditors to accept a reduced lump-sum payment. A professional firm works with your MCA funders, equipment lenders, and vendors to settle debts for 40-60% less than owed. The process typically takes 3-18 months with attorney-led firms.

Businesses typically resolve debt for 30-60 cents on the dollar. After fees (15-25%), net savings range from 20-40%. Attorney-led firms achieve higher reductions due to litigation leverage.

Settlement can temporarily impact credit, but most businesses pursuing settlement are already behind on payments. The goal is eliminating unserviceable debt so you can rebuild from a clean baseline. Most scores recover within 12-24 months.

Attorney-led firms like Delancey Street settle in 3-9 months. General firms take 24-48 months. MCA settlements move faster because funders prefer quick recovery over protracted litigation.
