Early MCA Payoff
How to Ask, What to Compare, and Why Some Funders Refuse
An early MCA payoff discount often reduces the factor charge rather than the full balance, so the owner should confirm the eligible component, obtain a dated written figure, and distinguish a performing payoff from a distressed settlement.

The discount was genuine. It applied to a portion of the balance the owner had not thought to isolate.
An early payoff offer on an MCA can reduce the amount due without reducing it in the manner the headline implies, because the stated percentage often attaches to the factor charge rather than to every dollar outstanding.
Before any offer is measured, the agreement defines the only question that matters, which is what the percentage touches.
The Factor Charge and the Total Balance
Credibly's published MCA guidance describes an Early Remittance Discount under which a merchant that remits the full outstanding balance in a single lump sum can receive a twenty percent reduction of the factor component of the amount sold, subject to the terms of the receivables purchase agreement, and that sentence contains the entire negotiation in miniature, since the benefit, the method, and the conditions appear together and none of them can be read in isolation from the others.
The discount is, if we are being precise, a reduction in the price of the advance rather than forgiveness of any portion of the funds the business received, and eligibility requires the absence of default events with a timely remittance history, which means the merchants most in need of relief are the least likely to qualify for this particular form of it.
Consider a hypothetical account in which the remaining factor charge equals $20,000 within a larger outstanding balance. A twenty percent reduction of that component would equal $4,000, a real saving that leaves the remainder of the balance untouched. The figures here illustrate arithmetic alone rather than any provider's current offer.
The offeror may also require payment by wire with verification of the originating account and the source of funds. Confirm that procedure before the money moves.
A Performing Payoff and a Distressed Settlement
The agreement rewarded early payment. It punished early distress.
Those two outcomes look like opposites from the owner's chair, and the file treats them as separate transactions governed by separate logic, which is why a merchant who asks for a discount while missing debits can receive a truthful answer to a question nobody posed. The performing payoff concerns a contract in good standing closed ahead of schedule. The distressed settlement concerns an obligation the funder already doubts it will collect in full. That decides nothing until the dated figure arrives, though it decides a great deal about which desk the request should reach.
Most merchants discover the distinction only after they have asked for the wrong one, and the correction costs weeks, since the account continues to debit while the correspondence travels toward the correct department. The file sat in a drawer the way winter coats sit in a closet through June: present, paid for, and peculiarly unsuited to the season.
Most owners call after the second missed debit. I understand the delay.
Within days of the quote, the owner must decide whether the business can perform a lump payment without borrowing the same money from a second funder at a higher price, because a discount financed by fresh debt transfers the obligation to a creditor with less patience. Review and analyze the operating account beside the payoff figure before authorizing the wire, since an extremely narrow margin after payment leaves the business with no room for the next payroll.
The Dated Payoff Figure
Request a dated payoff figure that shows the adjustment as a separate line.
The file should show the balance, the credits applied, and whether any debit collected after the quote changed the total. Collection does not pause while a figure is pending (the funder, who continues scheduled debits during the quote period, will apply payments that alter the final amount after the letter was issued, so the number on the page and the number on the day can differ without any party having acted in bad faith).
Keep the quote with the transfer record.
Why Some Funders Refuse
A discount for early performance assumes there will be performance. Default removes the assumption on which the price depended.
After default, the same percentage that appeared in the marketing text can vanish from the conversation without contradiction, since the conditions that created it no longer hold. Some contracts contain no prepayment term at all and fix the total payback regardless of timing. Others reconcile against receivables performance and adjust through a defined procedure rather than through negotiation. Whether other providers apply the same conditions is a question this article cannot answer from the sources reviewed.
Refusal also follows from the source of the funds. A payoff supplied by another lender invites verification the funder will not waive, and I have yet to see a funder treat third party money with the same speed as money already in the merchant's account, though the policies differ too much to state as a rule. The verification protects the funder against a payment that later reverses, and it buys the owner no protection at all.
Ask which clause was invoked, and keep the answer with the file.
Payoff Review With Delancey Street
Often we see owners compare the discount against the balance while ignoring the calendar, though the calendar is what makes the comparison honest, since a lump sum due this week and operations due every week draw from the same account. Steps the owner takes, or does not take, before the wire leaves will decide whether the payoff ends the pressure or concentrates it.
Delancey Street offers a free confidential initial review of MCA payoff and settlement questions. It is a settlement company rather than a law firm, and legal matters are handled by independently licensed counsel, whether counsel the owner retains or counsel the company coordinates.
We review the agreement, identify the eligible component, and construct a payoff instruction that addresses both the arithmetic and the conditions the funder attached to it. Resist the urge to promise the lump sum before the dated figure confirms the terms, since any assurance given even casually can be used against the business if the payment falls short. Ask the adviser to confirm the same date on every document, and counsel should ensure no statement enlarges the obligation the payoff was meant to close.
Simply bring the agreement, the payment history, and the written quote to the first discussion. An extremely useful meeting is one in which the numbers on the page match the money in the account.

Yes. MCA debt can be settled through specialized defense attorneys who understand the purchase-of-receivables structure. Attorney-led firms like Delancey Street achieve 40-60% reductions by leveraging reconciliation clause failures, usury arguments, and COJ defense.
Businesses typically resolve debt for 30-60 cents on the dollar. After fees (15-25%), net savings range from 20-40%. Attorney-led firms achieve higher reductions due to litigation leverage.
Settlement can temporarily impact credit, but most businesses pursuing settlement are already behind on payments. The goal is eliminating unserviceable debt so you can rebuild from a clean baseline. Most scores recover within 12-24 months.
Attorney-led firms like Delancey Street settle in 3-9 months. General firms take 24-48 months. MCA settlements move faster because funders prefer quick recovery over protracted litigation.
