New York DWI ?Äì Ignition & Vehicle Interlock Device

Using Interlock Devices to Prevent DWIs in New York
Driving While Intoxicated or DWI is a severe offense in the state of New York that may lead to criminal charges, fines, and license suspension. It may result when an individual operates a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol that affects their driving performance. Even if your Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) level is below 0.08%, you can still face arrest if the officer finds you impaired. In this article, we will discuss how ignition and vehicle interlock devices help prevent DWI cases.

What are Ignition Interlock Devices (IID)?
An IID functions by reading a driver’s BAC through a Breathalyzer installed in the vehicle as ordered by the court upon conviction. If your BAC reading is above the legal limit, which is 0.08%, you cannot start your car. Furthermore, drivers who have been required by the court to use an IID must install it on all vehicles they operate or own.

When using an IID, drivers must blow into the device before turning on their vehicles to provide a breath sample containing no alcohol content for it to start properly.

The benefits of using these devices are quite remarkable. Firstly, IIDs permit convicted offenders to lawfully operate their vehicles while reducing occurrences of drunk driving that may lead to fatalities on our highways. It also enables individuals with DWI convictions to drive themselves legally to work, school, medical appointments among others rather than relying solely on public transport systems.

Another essential benefit provided by ignition interlock devices is that it helps reduce recidivism for previously convicted impaired drivers from reoffending again hence increasing chances for rehabilitation over time- factor critical for preventing future road accidents due to drunk driving habits.

Vehicle Interlock Device (VID)
Portable Evidential Breath Testing Device (PEBT), otherwise known as VID is similar to IIDs; however VIDS detect alcohol impairments solely through breath samples. Unlike IIDs, VIDS cannot control the ignition system of a vehicle.

In New York, VIDS are not used as substitutes for Ignition interlock devices; however, the former has high accuracy levels within close limits and provides primary test evidence for law enforcement agencies (LEAs).

How can one get an IID or VID installed in their vehicle?
To install an IID or VID:

  1. Contact any E-ZPass/Open Road toll office center
  2. Set up an appointment for installation
  3. Present your court order which requires you to use an IID or VID
  4. Pay all related fees to avoid legal consequences.
