New Jersey Law: Weapon Possession at Educational Institutions
New Jersey has strict rules when it comes to possessing firearms or any type of weapon on an educational institution’s property such as schools or colleges. It is essential that you understand these rules so that you can make informed decisions regarding your actions. Let us provide you with vital information about New Jersey laws concerning carrying handguns, rifles, shotguns, pistols or any form of weapon on educational institution property.
Firearms
N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5(e)(1) is a law in New Jersey that prohibits individuals from carrying firearms on school grounds or university property without prior written authorization. Even if you possess a valid concealed carry permit, breaking the law carries serious consequences. Violators will be charged with Third Degree crime and can face up to five (5) years in jail, along with fines and other penalties.
Other Weapons: Bat, Knife, And More
N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5(e)(2) makes it a Fourth Degree crime to knowingly possess any type of weapon on educational institution grounds or property. It doesn’t matter if it’s a knife or bat; violators can be charged and imprisoned for up to eighteen (18) years. If an item or device is deemed inappropriate for possession, it automatically becomes classified as a weapon under this law.
Imitation Firearms
New Jersey law classifies imitation firearms carried on an educational institution’s premises as Disorderly Persons’ offenses according to N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4(e)(3). Convicted offenders could serve up to six months behind bars.
